Smart Poles

Case Study - Uganda

Smart Poles represent a transformative solution for bridging the digital divide, promoting social change, and fostering economic growth in rural African communities. By combining digital connectivity, smart lighting solutions, and potential government e-services, these units have the power to empower residents and transform rural areas into hubs of digital innovation.

With success stories emerging from Uganda, where iSAT Africa has installed these poles, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. As Smart Poles continue to be deployed across rural Africa, the vision of a connected, empowered, and sustainable future is within reach, empowering rural communities and ensuring their rightful place in the digital age.

iSAT Africa has brought mobile internet access to communities in northeastern Uganda, marking a significant milestone. They achieved this by setting up five mobile network sites in collaboration with Parallel Wireless, enabling Open RAN 2G and 3G connectivity in remote areas that were previously more than 30 kilometers away from the nearest operational network tower.

iSAT partnered with Camusat for passive equipment, which involved the construction of concrete-less sites to reduce construction costs and facilitate site relocation. Additionally, iSAT has installed two innovative smart poles in the center of each town, featuring solar-powered streetlights, USB charging ports, and WiFi connectivity to benefit local businesses.

Users making their first mobile internet connection were also taken into account when designing this turnkey solution. Together with MTN, iSat will educate the local populace on how to use the services they need, including SIM card registration, airtime purchases, and mobile money transfers.
“iSAT Africa is proud to have contributed to the improvement of the economic and social life of the inhabitants of the selected rural areas in Uganda for the GSMA’s project. “We developed our rural connectivity solution after years of experience with people in Africa, with a vision of connecting the unconnected communities.”

Connectivity For All

Smart Poles equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots serve as digital lifelines, providing internet access to previously disconnected rural communities. This connectivity fosters social change by facilitating access to education, healthcare information, and online services.

Empowering Education

With Smart Poles, rural schools gain access to digital resources and e-learning platforms. This enables students to engage in online education, access educational content, and collaborate with students from across the globe, leveling the playing field and enhancing learning opportunities.

Strengthening Healthcare

Through telemedicine initiatives supported by Smart Poles, remote communities gain access to healthcare professionals and services. This allows residents to receive medical advice, consultations, and even remotely monitor chronic conditions, improving overall healthcare outcomes.

Enhanced Public Safety

Video monitoring and surveillance systems integrated into Smart Poles enhance public safety and deter criminal activities. This provides peace of mind to residents and fosters a secure environment in rural areas.

Smart Lighting for Efficient Energy Usage

LED lighting systems in Smart Poles conserve energy, reducing electricity bills and minimizing environmental impact. They can be integrated with motion sensors to optimize lighting usage, illuminating specific areas when needed.

Government e-Services

Smart Poles can serve as centralized hubs for government e-services. Communities can access various government services, such as certificate applications, document submissions, and administrative processes, conveniently from these units. This eliminates the need for residents to travel long distances to government offices, saving time and resources.

Digital Empowerment

Smart Poles in rural African communities unlock new opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and social development. Students gain access to quality education, entrepreneurs can promote their products and services to a broader market, and residents can access vital government services.

Increased Civic Engagement

Smart Poles with public announcement systems enable local governments to disseminate important information and engage with citizens effectively. This strengthens community bonds and fosters participatory governance.

Digital Transformation in Agriculture

Weather sensors integrated into Smart Poles provide real-time data for farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions about crop cultivation, irrigation, and resource management. This promotes sustainable agriculture practices and improves productivity.
